I have the election date

for Germany
18 September

That'll be a very interesting election to watch. The SPD (social democrats) have been instituting some neo-liberal reforms so to prevent collapsing their welfare system altogether. This has been unpopular with their tradition constitutents. Thus there will be a swing away from them, but it could either go to the German Greens or to the CDU/CSU.

Of course, most of the focus will be on our election here, so keep an eye on BBC and co for this one.

While I am abig fan of the BBC website, their coverage of the German election lead-up has not been up to scratch so far. You're better off watching for Deutsche Welle's web coverage:
http://dw-world.de

And the traditional SPD support is not going to the Greens. They are really struggling. That support which is haemorrhaging left is going to the new "Left Party" who are polling at around 11% at present.
